Ammonites are probably the most widely known fossils.  They usually possess a ribbed spiral-form shell.  They lived in the seas and oceans between 240 to 65 million years ago.  They became extinct along with the dinosaurs.  Ammonites belong to the group of cephalopods, which were predators in the sea.  Ammonites are excellent index fossils.  Scientists link the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to a specific geologic period.  

Large ammonite fossils make great décor pieces for inside and outside.  They are sometimes used for yard and garden art as well.  Makes for a great starter fossil piece for kids and adults of all ages.
