Ammonites are probably the most widely known fossil.  They usually posses a ribbed sprial-form shell.  They lived in the seas and oceans between 240 to 65 million years ago.  They died off along with the dinosaurs.  Ammonites belong to the group cephalopods which were predators in the sea.  Ammonites are excellent index fossils.  Scientist link the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to a specific geologic time periods.  

Location found: East Texas

Ammonite fossils make great decor pieces for inside and outside.  They are sometimes used for yard and garden art as well.  Makes for a great starter fossil piece for kids and adults of all ages.
